Describe your ideal day off?
Getting some Coldstone ice cream, and then watching a movie.
Favorite trip?
Most definitely my trip to Alaska. I spent 8 days in Port Lions where I went bear viewing in the Katmai National Par, and ate lunch on the Hallo Bay Glacier. I went fishing for King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Ling Cod, and the highlight of the trip was catching a 97 pound Halibut. I also saw Bald Eagles, Whales breaching; it was such a spiritual experience.
What can't you leave home without?
My Oakley sunglasses and cell phone.
Favorite place to shop?
Costco (a wholesale/bulk buy store); I'm an addict.
What is your life motto?
Life's no dress rehearsal; you only get one chance at it. You've got to grab it around the throat, and give it a good shake.
Most admired person outside of golf?
My brother James.
Career defining moment?
Winning my first Duramed Futures Tour event in Albany, NY (2003). I was at my lowest mentally and emotionally going into the week, and I needed to win to afford to play! It was an amazing week that finished in a playoff. I had to trust, and more importantly believe in myself.
What motivates you?
I respond to challenges and get motivated by other athletes who take their success for granted. Golf is what we do; not who we are!
What was your first job?
My first job was at McDonalds in Albury when I was 14. Two months and just 6 shifts later I was unemployed. My other impressive work history includes;
- Red Rooster - Fast food chicken chain in Melbourne for a year
- Capitol Golf Club - I worked part-time as a caddy for 2 years in Melbourne while I was in the AIS
- Pepperdine Univ. – I worked in ticket sales at the University Theatre while I was in summer school, and then during the year I worked as an usher
Apparently after my ushering experience my sister told me I became more dramatic and elaborate in my story telling. This was a direct result of the drama students I became friends with.
What's the best golf shot you ever hit?
The best golf shot I made in competition was from a fairway bunker at the 2002 World Amateur championships in Malaysia. I was laying 2 in a fairway bunker on a par 5, and had 150 yards to the pin with the ball below my feet on a downhill lie. I have never been as nervous over any shot before as I was on that 18th hole. I knew at the time that our team needed me to make par to win. I hit a 7 iron to 20 feet and 2 putted for the team championship. It was the best shot ever, because it truly meant the most to me thus far in my career.
What's your most embarrassing moment on a golf course?
Let’s just say sometimes a photo can tell a thousand words. I was playing in an ALPG pro-am at Catalina, NSW in 2004. It was the last round of the tournament and with 7 holes to play I decided to visit the restroom for a much needed break. I discovered 6 holes later when I went to read a putt I had split my shorts. It was then that I realized that this must have happened in the restroom 1 hour earlier. Don’t ask me how!
To this day I believe my pro-am partners were either blind and didn’t see the results, or were too embarrassed to tell me. Apparently they did notice the hole in my shorts and 2 hrs after my round I was given an honorable mention at the awards ceremony. Here's the photo to prove it!
And just for the record...they were my favorite shorts.
Do you play a musical instrument?
I attempt to play the guitar, and in my opinion I sound fantastic. I love music and the guitar has always intrigued me. I first picked up the guitar and played in the local church band when I was 15. I did notice that they put me behind the drummer and the electric guitarist. I’m still not sure why they did this. In all honesty I’m not very good, but I love it and it takes me away from reality for little while.
Who is the most famous person you've met?
I met the 41st US President George H.W. Bush, Sr. and First Lady Barbara Bush at the 1998 Presidents Cup in Melbourne. I ended up carrying the United States Flag at the Opening Ceremony. Little did I know that 2 years later I would be studying in the United States on a golf scholarship.
Other than trying to play guitar, do you have any other hobbies?
Apart from movies, I love reading. I get addicted to suspense novels such as those written by James Patterson and Robert Ludlum. I’ve read all of James Patterson’s books and the time flies when I read them. They are the perfect reading material for trains, planes, and automobiles which I spend the majority of my time in. I also have to do a shout out to Nicholas Sparks; you rock! I am an obsessed fan, and I’m constantly checking the web to find out when his next novel is ready for release.
